Of the many thousands of species that have evolved in isolation on the Australian continent, three species - the Banksia, Waratah and Eucalyptus - are representative of a diverse array of unusual flowers found across Australia.

The Waratah, Telopea speciosissima, is the floral emblem of New South Wales. Producing a large brilliant crimson flower that is discernable from a distance in the bush, its genus was named from the latin telopas 'seen at a distance'. It is one of Australia's most unique flowers and is widely exported for its unusual shape and spectacular colour.
